Gendered migration responses to drought in Malawi

چکیده
Abstract Migration is a common means of adaptation to weather shocks. Previous research has identified heterogeneous effects according age, sex, and wealth, but little still known about how marriage-related institutions affect such migration. Relying on quasi-experimental identification strategy, we analyze marriage- work-related migration in Malawi following large droughts, separating the for female male migrants different age groups. The analysis based stated motives reveals marginal decreases among girls, increases within districts women older We also find between-district boys, smaller extent girls severe drought. results add evidence potentially adverse as coping mechanism drought when other insurance do not exist.

Weeded Out? Gendered Responses to Failing Calculus
Although women graduate from college at higher rates than men, they remain underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. This study examines whether women react to failing a STEM weed-out course by switching to a non-STEM major and graduating with a bachelor's degree in a non-STEM field. While competitive courses designed to weed out potential STEM majors ...
متن کاملPhysio-biochemical and Enzymatic Responses of Sunflower to Drought Stress
Drought stress is a serious adverse factor that limits sunflower growth and productivity. The stress induces a range of physiological and biochemical responses in sunflower. So, evaluation of defense systems is important for producing resistant cultivars. In this study, physio-biochemical changes and antioxidant enzymes activitiesof six sunflower lines were evaluated under normal and irrigation...

Effects of salinity and drought on growth, contents of proline, malondialdehyde (MDA), proteinand activity of antioxidative enzymes were studied in two Trigonella species. Seeds andexplants of T. foenum-graecum and T. aphanoneura were grown on Murashige and Skoogmedium (MS) complemented with iso-osmotic concentrations of NaCl (0, 100, 150 mM) andmannitol (0, 180, 275 mM). Growth and relative wa...
متن کاملPlant Responses to Drought and Stress Tolerance
In the natural environment plants are well adapted to minimize damages which only occurs under extreme conditions. In the frame of “physiological window” mild drought induces in plants regulation of water loss and uptake allowing maintenance of their leaf relative water content within the limits where the photosynthetic capacity shows no or little changes. But severe drought induces in plants u...
متن کاملGendered Patterns of Migration in Rural South Africa.
Gender is increasingly recognized as fundamental to understanding migration processes, causes and consequences. In South Africa, it is intrinsic to the social transformations fueling high levels of internal migration and complex forms of mobility. While female migration in Africa has often been characterized as less prevalent than male migration, and primarily related to marriage, in South Afri...
